I just fell for a very scary #aprilfools in a Facebook group for Icelandic Geology, which is usually a place for serious discussion - hell, they remove pictures that were obviously done by entering restricted areas or ask about how to circumvent police barricades.
But today, they accepted a post "Katla started to erupt today 🌋 Confirmed 👆"

Every time the power goes out I go to the local Facebook group to complain. And every time I chuckle at the banner image for the group.

Cw: discussion of #transphobia; JKR; politics and power
Someone in a Facebook group I'm in asked:
"What the f☆☆k has JK Rowling got to do with removing the appalling Zionist Keir Starmer & the rest of our neoliberal NATO supporting warmongering parliamentary representatives from power?
Asking for a very angry feminist socialist lesbian disabled 70 year old."
I thought this was actually a deceptively good question, so I thought I'd share my answer here...
The thing to understand is that trans rights and trans healthcare are being used as a 'wedge issue' by the right wing: something to divide and distract us while they get on with their usual business of plundering everybody.
Rowling, as a billionaire with a huge platform and a great deal of time on her hands, has done more than practically anybody else to drive this wedge deeper.
Like every scapegoating campaign used by the right - against gay people, immigrants, minorities, benefits claimants and so on - the anti-trans moral panic has serious, material consequences for its targets.
The ones who benefit from these hate campaigns (and often fund them, directly or indirectly) are largely indifferent to the harm caused; the distraction and division are the main points, but stoking fear and hatred are time-worn methods of achieving those.
Hope this helps!

It’s one traitor after another in the #AirForce lately…
“A U.S. Air Force intelligence analyst advocated publicly for a second Civil War, running a high-profile anti-government Facebook group—and at one point shared classified information he ‘likely’ got from the ultra-covert National Security Agency, according to investigators.”

Well-meaning relative sees a facebook post about a lost greyhound on the loose
…shares it to a greyhound facebook group
…tags me in their post
…asks me if I am a member of that group and have I seen their share
It is a group I (help) run.

The #Sun at 0:23 UTC on the 10th and 2:21 UTC on the 11th, i.e. 1/2 hour ago: the big #ActivityRegion (1)3576 has just crossed the disk's center - and performed an almost-X #flare a few hours ago: facebook.com/photo/?fbid=89380 and facebook.com/photo/?fbid=88181 (this could have consequences; details are TBD). A much stronger X3.3 flare on the 9th - spaceweatherlive.com/en/news/v - was harmless, though, at it happened in another group already behind the Sun's limb.

There is a Facebook group for this area called “Everything Sunshine Coast”. The description/rules say, “No irrelevant posts.”
The admins either don’t know what “everything” means or they don’t know what “irrelevant” means. 😂

<3 had a lovely time organizing different things between different LGBT groups
you know, they also had... a facebook group
*gasp!*
(I think the local mutual aid did much more positively for my life, than that angry "grr, no threads, queers don't use threads" conversation on fedi)
(and... guess what... organizing will continue on any platform, regardless of whatever tech absolutists think)

I have a private Facebook group for a family thing and for the last week I’ve been getting a flood of requests from random accounts trying to join the group. Anyone else ever seen this? Is this just going to go on forever?

A colleague who’s in the online advertising space explained to me that while WhatsApp messages are indeed end to end encrypted, the social graph that links you to your connections (ie the people you message with) is not encrypted and not private. Facebook sells that info, but most people incorrectly think that because messages are encrypted that everything about your WhatsApp messaging is private. It is not. I’m not defending this, just explaining it.

Just had a weird stress dream where my Libra Link software unexpectedly updated itself, connected with Facebook, and I started seeing the lines of other members of a Facebook diabetes support group when I went to check my blood sugar, like they had gamified it into some kind of weird competition.
Abbott Pharmaceutical: if you are getting any ideas in this direction: no no no no no no.

As a result of this, I was booted from this Facebook group. The only reason I realized this months later was when I looked to follow up with my well earned “I told you so” that following winter. Someone had of course been unable to stop going down this hill and clean took out the stop sign. I’m just reminded of this story today, as I witnessed 1 car sliding straight into the middle of the intersection as I went the other direction. 2/3

This just in from @… at @…:
#DriveThruRPG will shortly—within a week—start producing

Post from Nick Brooke to the “Call of Cthulhu Role-Playing Game & Players” Facebook group:

“Excellent news for Call of Cthulhu fans Down Under: in less than a week, DriveThruRPG hopes to start producing print-on-demand books at a new print location in Australia. After that, all POD orders from customers in Australia will ship from there, *significantly* reducing shipping time (and, eventually, costs.)”
A comment by Nick Brooke on the previous post:

“I updated the original post to incorporate a clarification from DriveThruRPG. At the time of posting, they say:

“Shipping speeds to AU and NZ customers will be improved. **NOTE:** Shipping estimates on our site will not indicate these improved speeds for the immediate future.

“Print prices will remain the same as UK prices.

“Customers who live in Australia or New Zealand will not see any change in shipping cost.

“When we roll out the next ite…

Random story time: About 5 years ago a local blowhard in my neighbourhood lobbied to get an unnecessary stop sign installed near his house. It was already a 2-way stop, but it was at the end of a long, gradual hill. At the time it happened I made a post in the local Facebook group about it, and how it was dangerous placing a stop sign at the bottom of the hill. I recall some discussion on it, nothing too intense, but apparently this put the local blowhard’s nose out of joint 1/3
